NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Precision Air Conditioning for Server Room and Art Gallery

Dear All We have two projects that are attempting LEED 2009 NC Certification the first one is office building with server room and the second one is Arg Gallery. Both projects use precision air conditioning for server room and art exhibition room respectively. Could anyone please clarify 1) Is there any efficiency requirement as per 6.4 mandatory provision of ASRHAE 90.1-2007 for precision air conditioning 2) Can we assume the energy consumption by precision air conditioning used for server room and art exhibition are process energy. Therefore, the energy consumption for baseline and design case will be the same. Thank you much Panupant

1. I am not familiar with the term "precision" air conditioning. If none of the systems in the 6.8.1 tables applies to the system in question then there is no minimum efficiency requirement. If you check newer version of 90.1 you may find the system addressed to get an idea of the minimum efficiency to seek. 2. Neither are considered process energy. They are conditioning space for the equipment/art and the people in those spaces. You can't separate the two in many situations.

Dear Marcus Thank you very much insightful clarification. The precision air conditioning uses cooling and reheating for precisely controlling temperature and relative humidity. The example of the product can be found in the following link: http://www.airedale.com/web/Products/Precision-Air-Conditioning.htm. For us, it is not clear whether the term "Air Conditioners" in table 6.8.1 covers the precision air conditioning so that its efficiency has to meet the minimum efficiency requirement. Can you please advice ? Thank you Panupant

This looks like the systems addressed in Table 6.8.1K in ASHRAE 90.1-2010. So I agree that they are not covered in 2007 and have no minimum efficiency requirements for LEED 2009 projects.

We had a related issue on a project where the vendor said that they did not need to comply with the minimum requirements of 90.1 for a Data room because the system fell under 90.1 exception 2.3c - use energy primarily to provide for commercial processes. However as the cooling is not classed as process energy under leed 2009 we could not beat the baseline building without the cooling unit meeting/beating the 90.1 minimum values used by the baseline (system 3).
