I am try to see what modifications our team can make to comply with the IEQc6.1 Controllability of systems lighting LEED credit. Right now we are short individual lighting controls in our open office area. We are willing to modify the current control set up in order to comply. The option we have come up with is to add task lighting to the 9 workstations in that area. What type of task lighting is acceptable for that type of setting? Also if we do add task lighting would we need to eliminate some of the overhead 2x4 lighting? We want to make sure that we don’t have excess wattage in that area.

Craig, your question about what kind of task lighting is acceptable is pretty open-ended.... want to throw out the ideas you're considering?Regarding eliminating the ambient lighting, I would definitely make sure that workstations are not overlit. While the credit requirements don't specify this, giving people controllability of task lighting when they are overlit in general is not a good strategy.

Hi Craig,
From a LEED perspective there isn't specific guidance on what kind of task lighting is acceptable. I would agree with Tristan on his advice for the overhead lights. You could have the overhead lights turn off when the task lights are on. Computers also provide a certain degree of light that you might want to account for though - as far as I know - computer light doesn't yet count as an individual occupant control.
