I included occupancy sensors to meet the controls requirement but my LEED reviewer indicated that they weren’t sufficient. Why is this?

Would future classrooms have to be included in this credit, even if they are not being included in other credits like IEQc1?

Victor, are these future classrooms in the scope of work for the current LEED-NC project? What are they being designed as now?LEED-NC certification covers the current scope of work—in most cases you don't have to anticipate future uses.

They are future classrooms with but pretty much empty. They will not have furniture, only one light but in terms of HVAC design the load calculations acounted for future user based on ashrae 90.1 occupancy rates. The rooms are whitin the boundary but since we do not know for sure how the space will be used we are not adding CO2 sensors for IEQc1, so it would not make sense to add controllability (technically they will still have the switch, but there is no point is pointing it out)

So it's like a Core and Shell situation. If they are planned as classrooms I would treat them as classrooms for this credit, though. I think you'd find it easier to do that than to exclude them, but you might be able to thread the needle either way.

LEED Interpretation 10102 specifically requires all spaces within the building (including unfinished spaces) to be included when the project is in LEED-NC rather than LEED-CS. Depending on your registration date, you could be held to those requirements and would need to provide the additional documentation that interpretation requires. I'd recommend reviewing that interpretation in detail.

Victor, if your project was registered prior to the date of Interpretation #10102 (11/1/2011), then you may not be subject to the requirements (i.e., you may be "grandfathered in"). If you were registered after that date, then you will definitely be held to the requirements stated in the Interpretation.
