If you have a MECHANICALLY conditioned space, does it compel you to have MECHANICAL ventilation (not NATURAL)? GH

No, you are definitely not compelled to have mechanical ventilation just because you have mechanical conditioning. An example is a house with an air conditioner that has operable windows for natural ventilation but no outdoor air intake for mechanical ventilation. I have had a project such as this successfully certified.

For version 2009 there is no requirement to mechanically ventilate when there is mechanical conditioning. ASHRAE 62.1-2010 however, does not allow for this configuration. I guess they caught on that it didnt really make sense for large office spaces. The next version of LEED therefore, will have to mechanically ventilate.
