CS-2009 SSc7.2:Heat Island Effect—Roof

green roof cover - ivy

Hello, I'm working on a project which is considering to use the ivy as green cover. My worries in considering this system as a green roof , consist of the definition of greenroof which is supposed to have a layer of soil. At the same time I'm sure that our system can reduce heat island effect, bacause of heat absorbition through the leave. Looking forward to having your advice.

Mario, I would say that this application of ivy is shading the roof, but not providing a vegetated roof per the credit language. Shading is a viable strategy on some other credits, such as in non-roof hardscapes, so the fact that LEED does not offer it here is significant, I think.I think you could seek a LEED Interpretation or otherwise make the case to GBCI, but at the outset I would not count on this strategy being accepted. If you learn more, please let us know.
