EBOM-2009 IEQc1.4:IAQ Best Management Practices—Reduce Particulates in Air Distribution

electronic air filters

Have any projects used electronic air filters (in conjunction with MERV 8 filters) as an alternative compliance path for this credit? This would remove a higher level of pollutants than MERV 8 alone, and this seems to satisfy the credit intent. Any input would be helpful!

We have used electronic air filters in conjunction with MERV 13 filters to go above and beyond this credit. I would expect LEED to reject a project using only MERV 8 with the electronic air filters, unless you can prove that it filters the same size particles as a MERV 13 filter. MERV 13 filters filter much smaller pollutants than MERV 8 that is why it is preferred by LEED to improve IAQ. While the electronic filters add benefit, it is not the same benefit (killing bacteria/viruses vs trapping small cancer causing particles). If you are set on using the electronic air filters, there are some that work in conjunction with a charged filter bag which give the assemble a MERV ratings. Strion Air, for example, is rated for MERV 13-15.
