electronic air filters

We have used electronic air filters in conjunction with MERV 13 filters to go above and beyond this credit. I would expect LEED to reject a project using only MERV 8 with the electronic air filters, unless you can prove that it filters the same size particles as a MERV 13 filter. MERV 13 filters filter much smaller pollutants than MERV 8 that is why it is preferred by LEED to improve IAQ. While the electronic filters add benefit, it is not the same benefit (killing bacteria/viruses vs trapping small cancer causing particles). If you are set on using the electronic air filters, there are some that work in conjunction with a charged filter bag which give the assemble a MERV ratings. Strion Air, for example, is rated for MERV 13-15.
