Waste Recycling Area

Why does your project boundary not include any land area? I would need to know more, but this may be an issue. Normally any land closely associated with building operations should be within the boundary—this would include recycling area. On the other hand, the MPR supplemental guidance says that some areas can be outside the boundary, but still used for credit compliance.

How about placing the recycling area in the basement so can be accessed by all tenants and acceptable by the recyling contractor for convenience of access from the outside plus most tenants prefer it down there for security reasons. Admitedly the basement is not within this project's boundary, but the intent of this Prerequisite is met, to provide a storage and recycling space.

So can it be located in the basement?

And Tristan, I cannot find specific areas which can be outside the project boundary in the MPR Supplemental Guidance...so maybe cannot have it in the basement after all?

Steve,The location of the storage facility for recycling is dependant on who needs access to it. So there should be collection bins at each work station and in kitchen areas. Meanwhile the central storage area can be located in a basement so long as you can show that the interested parties have access, say the maintenance staff for example.

Thanks Emily, in one of our LEED projects, the reviewer is not happy nevertheless with the basement option so we messaged him/her, and the response is self-explanatory:

"Plans have been provided showing the location of the recycling storage area in the basement, instead of within the LEED-CI project space. This is a Design phase prerequisite that relates to the design of the LEED-CI project space. It is not a site credit that relates to base building amenities."

Steve,I see your dilema. I appologize, I read this question quickly and responded from an NC point of view. It seems you'll have to designate space within the project area then, I have seen success with closet type areas for this purpose.Good luck!

No problem, Emily. We convinced the Owner to convert a hardly used dry pantry within the tenancy space into the recycling storage room, resubmitted and this indeed does the trick...the final design review we just received yesterday. We got it :)
