Using Appendix A of ASHRAE 62.1-2007

Has anyone ever used the alternative compliance option for this prerequisite by following Appendix A of ASHRAE 62.1-2007? The equipment designed for our facility is a VAV (variable air volume) system supplying multiple zones.

I have the same question. The build in calculator does not seem to support the Appendix A calculations. I see no other way to approach this other than to use the alternative compliance path, and upload the calculations. I'm also including a narrative explaining why we used Appendix A (multiple zone VAV system with some fan powered boxes). Hope that is enough! We won't be submitting for a while, so I would love to know anyone's feedback from USGBC if they have tried this approach.

Barbara, we have used this approach also. We've found that the letter template works better for smaller buildings and simple systems. As long as your spreadsheet is the ASHRAE provided one or a custom one that clearly outlines the Appendix A procedure and equations, you should be fine.

if using non-default occupancies for the LEED Online form (NC 2009) can actual occupancies be used, or must they be in terms of occupants per 1000 sf densities? For example, a 500sf office space with 1 occupant, can we use the value of 1, or must it be 2, since that is the occupant density per 1000sf? Thanks.

62MZ calculator seems to say 'actual occupancy' value is OK, but the LEED template column header indicates #/1000, so I think there is a discrepancy? 62MZ calc states "The design population of the zone. This will default to the number of people calculated using the default occupant density in Table 6-1. It may be overridden to the actual number of people expected to occupy the zone, which in turn may be reduced using time averaging where applicable."
