Mary, as you may know, there are two different versions of LEED for Retail—one for new construction, and one for commercial interiors.
I haven't yet seen a guidance document telling us which system to use for which retail projects, but I assume it's analagous to the current NC and CI systems, in which case the LEED rating system selection policy should help.
Now, my question back to you is, who is doing the LEED project? If it's the little retail stores, then it seems like they would want to do LEED-Retail-CI. If it's the shopping center owner, it sounds more like a LEED-CS project. Multiple buildings I would register as a block.
I would also think about timeframe and if you want to be a LEED for Retail pioneer. There are benefits to being among the first on anything, but drawbacks, like will USGBC have LEED Online fully set up to support your work when you need it?

Thanks for the input, Tristan. This is the shopping center owner doing the ground up buildings. He is redeveloping an existing dilapidated site, so we gain some benefits there. We initially looked into it as a Core and Shell project, but wondered if there would be any benefit to using LEED for Retail New Construction.

I sent an email on the issue to LEED Retail technical committee and they advised that LEED Retail is only for for full building including the fitout. For a shopping centre that is Shell and core we must still use LEED-CS
Copied from my response
"We have looked into this and are continually looking for a better solution for shopping center developers. For now, anyone fitting out the core & shell only will continue to use the LEED CS rating system. LEED for Retail NC is meant for buildings that have full interior fit out where everything inside can be included as well.
The USGBC is about to take another look at this issue in depth in hopes of finding a retail specific solution. There is no timeline for this now but stay tuned to the website for any new developments.
Thank you,
Nick Shaffer
