Hey Tristan! Thanks for the suggestion. Does the A350 work for smoke, too (or is it just for allergens)? I've done a little research and they all seem to be for small rooms -- not really for lofts (high cubic SF).

Hm, I don't know. I would just check what they say on the site where it's sold. We have it for allergens—not for smoke in particular.Sounds like maybe you need negative pressurization and a dedicated HVAC with MERV 13 filtration, yada yada.

Well, I'm looking for a solution that I can take with me -- it's just a rental apartment, for now. Thanks for the help!

Hello Karen, I understand the frustration with other peoples vices infiltrating your home. By far the best air purifier's around are the Healthway systems, www.healthway.com This will help with not only the particles, but also the chemicals and odor that smoke produce. The larger model is good upto 2000 sq. ft. and will cover all the pollution problems in a home. Good Luck!

I second the Healthway products recommendation, I use one and I have asthma and allergies so I really rely on it. You might try simply using different filters in you apartment. Better filters in your furnace and AC system can make a big difference. I use these air filters in my home. cost a bit more but worth it.
