Lisa, you could only earn SSc7.1 with this garage if you include it in consistently in your credit calculations. In this case it may appear to GBCI that you are cherry-picking a green benefit from a nearby building without consistently evaluating how that building affects the overall LEED rating for your project.

If the parking garage is essential to the day to day operation of the facility, the leed project boundry should include it. I my opinion, a set amount of parking should be required by future versions of leed. Buildings don't and can't not have place for the occupants to park.

I would like to re-open dialogue on this thread. I do not see clear precedent/ logic that an existing parking garage must be consistently included in all credit calculations in order to take advantage of an existing parking structure that will serve a new building, to earn SS Credit 7.1. For instance, how would you include the construction material value of the garage in various MR 4, 5Credits? What if it was built some time ago - would you than escalate the cost, etc? As well, it would seem that this is a common enough situation that if it had to be included, there would be clear language to that effect. Thoughts? Thank You

It appears this question has already been resolved, however is in conflict with the opinion shared by Tristan above. Via the discussion thread RE: SS credit 4.4 Parking Capacity, and the clarification referenced in the MPR Clarification Document. "Facilities (including parking) that are not within the LEED project boundary but are used to demonstrate compliance with a credit or prerequisite, as allowed per the rating system and reference guide, need not be considered for other prerequisite, edit, or MPR compliance. However, those facilities cannot be used to show compliance for other LEED projects, unless the sufficient capacity is present."

Yes, I was rereading the MPR supplemental guidance last night and looking at the same thing. I think you're probably right.

I've thought about this more and also run it by some other folks. I think that if the parking garage is existing and shared, you don't have to include it in the LEED boundary—but if you wanted  to count it toward a credit like SSc7.1, it would have to be included in the boundary.Generally, it would not have to be included in the boundary for SSc4. For tricky situations like this I would also recommend sending a question to your reviewer.

we are a third party certification institute and we certify Eco-Building materials in Italy, I'd like to know if, regarding the SSc7.1.e 7.2, there are any european standard to follow and use, except the ASTM method tests stated in the LEED NC, many thanks
