You're Invited: Revamping the Monthly All Networks Meetup!

Hello Sustainability Leaders!

The monthly all Peer Networks Meetup has been a wonderful way for casual “face-to-face” connections since the beginning of the pandemic. However, after more than a year with the same structure, we think it’s time for a change. Throughout our virtual summits and events one of the most popular aspects has been impromptu networking, so we want to bring more of that connection-sparking to everyone!

To create more regular opportunities for connecting with your fellow Sustainability Leaders, we plan to revamp the monthly all networks calls starting in November. Our vision is to keep these meetups casual and fun, while still gently facilitated to avoid uncomfortable silence or everyone talking over each other.

For November’s call we’ll offer you chances to connect with each other while co-creating a First Fridays space with us. Questions might include: Who do you want to meet? From which of the five Peer Networks? What do you most want to hear and share in this space? One awesome example is this thread Anne Hicks Harney kicked off about having Coffee Chats with Contractors! What other ideas do you have?

So, for Friday, November 5th, 11am - Noon ET (8am - 9am PT), we invite you to brew, steep, ice, or pour your favorite morning beverage and come sip and energize together to kick off the November First Friday! Register for the Zoom meeting here and you will receive a confirmation email from Zoom where you’ll find a link to easily add this call to your calendar.

Looking forward to seeing you then!

Hello Green Gurus, Here’s a reminder that our relaunch of the All-Peer Networks monthly calls is coming up this Friday! (Nov. 5, 11am-12pm ET/8-9am PT) Who should attend?
  • All Peer Networks members!
    • Consultants
    • Community Design Leaders
    • Contractors
    • Architects
    • MEP Engineers
  • New members and long-term members
  • Members from big firms and small firms
  • Extroverts and introverts
  • Green tech nerds
  • Superstar networkers
  • Fun-lovers and action-oriented folks
We’re currently thinking that each month’s call will differ slightly, so we’re hoping to create a place for everyone. We’d love a variety of perspectives on how we might accomplish that (including the above and more). What should you expect?
  • A chance to meet some of your fellow Green Gurus
  • Time to chat in pairs and small groups
  • Opportunities to share how you’d most like to connect with each other
  • Some unconventional Zoom meeting structures
  • A fun game or two
If you can’t make it but you still have ideas for what these calls could look like (or other events and opportunities you’d like to see), please post to this thread or email me or RoseAnn! We’d love to hear what you’re thinking. This space is for you to make the most of your memberships and build the interconnectivity of this community. Hope to see you on Friday or hear from you soon!
Register here to join.

Hi Green Gurus, Thanks for a fun call on Friday! Here are some of your top ideas of ways to connect with each other. What’s missing? What ideas does this spark? Especially if you couldn’t make it, we want to hear what else you would add!
  • More regional meet-ups (like the Boston Mini-Summit)
  • Cross-network connecting and industry-specific challenges
  • Substance over glitz (no large Zooms without breakouts, no sales pitches)
  • Competition in teams - scavenger hunt, rap song, design competition, etc.
  • Meet in person, choose a location with the smallest carbon impact for attendees, and do an activity while there to offset carbon impacts
  • Do a project for a non-profit together (ex. pro-bono design consulting for Habitat for Humanity)
  • Real-time/Slack-style chat
  • Virtual tours
  • Pen pals

Congratulations Sustainability Leaders! You all have accomplished a lot this year. From just the group on Friday’s call we had:
  • articles published
  • homes purchased
  • new sustainability positions created
  • degrees finished and new jobs started
  • prizes won
  • growing families
  • certifications
  • big contracts
  • NZE, LBC, Passive House, and Mass Timber buildings
  • carbon tracking
  • firm education
  • subcommittee meetings
  • and more!
You’re not stopping there though - you learned some great lessons this year too, and you have big plans for the future!
  • Human health must be the #1 priority
  • Make Green building certification a requirement for EVERY project
  • Continuing to draw a line from healthier building materials, to lower embodied carbon, to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, in the built environment.
  • Community scale green - like minded far reaching. Getting beyond the usual.
  • Obtain a formal commitment from firm leadership to get our sustainability, our EDI, and our design excellence initiatives explicitly linked.
  • How to gather data from all different job sites for carbon tracking - make easier to track down/find
  • Move into our new LEED CI office space before the end of the year (more operable windows!!!)
  • Set up a game plan for communications in 2022 - internal and external!
  • Deep energy retrofit my house w/ new envelope and systems
  • Persuade a current project client to pursue the best fit and not just the flashiest sustainable building solution
  • Clear communication (both internally and publicly) of sustainability as a core pillar of our firm’s culture, mission, and values
We know there’s a lot more, so we encourage you to use this thread for shout-outs to any of your fellow Green Gurus. (Or to toot your own horn!) It was great to see all of you who were on Friday’s call! Thanks for joining us to celebrate and uplift each other. Congratulations to everyone on an impressive year despite the inevitable hardships and challenges. Here’s to the next being even better! Jen for RoseAnn and the rest of the BuildingGreen team
