I'm working on a buildiing that is on the national historic register. The building has a large illuminated sign permanently and prominently mounted on the roof announcing the name of the property. We would like to achieve the light pollution credit for the site lighting using the BUG method, but would this large sign eliminate our chances of pursuing this credit. There is little likelihood of modifying this large sign as it is considered intragral to the historic property. Nor is is part of our scope of work.

As far as LEED, No. Lighting for externally illuminated signage is not exempt. You may be able to calculate how much uplight is blocked by the sign. But if it is a large sign with old lighting I'll doubt you can show compliance with this credit.
