Considering we must include appliances in the indoor water reduction prerequisite and credit, then yes, I would include appliances in the BPDO credits.

The v4 BPDO Calculator Instructions tab states "Includes hard costs for CSI MasterFormat 2012 Divisions 3-10, 31.60.00, 32.10.00, 32.30.00, and 32.90.00 only. Excludes mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components and equipment." Residential appliances are in Division 11 so they should not be included.

Thank you, Summer, however I don't see that CSI Divisions language in the v4 BPDO Calculator Instructions. The project I am working on is NC for an office building, not residential.

Products in Division 11 may optionally be included in MR BPDO credits per LEED interpretation 10409 https://www.usgbc.org/content/10409

Sara, make sure you have the most current calculator for LEED v4 BD+C projects, this is v4_BPDO Calculator_v06. If you go to the Instructions tab and look at the cells in column G where you would input $ - , you will see a red arrow in the upper right hand corner (G18, G24). Hover over the red arrow and the instructions describing which CSI divisions are included will pop up.

The Materials & Resources 'overview' section within the reference guide provides a section on "Qualifying Products and Exclusions" which helps add to this discussion.
"permanently installed building products" are defined as products and materials that create the building or are attached to it. Examples include structure and enclosure elements, installed finishes, framing, interior walls, cabinets and casework, doors, and roofs. Most of these materials fall into CSI 2012 MasterFormat Div 3-10, 31, and 32. Some products fall outside these divisions.
LI 10409 'overrules' what is in the reference guide and what is written on USGBC tools/templates/calculators.
Also, when completing the BPDO calculator.... the Actual Material Cost path allows div 3-10, 31, 32 plus optional MEP components. The Default Material Cost path includes 3-10, 31, 32 ONLY; exclude MEP equipment. So I would suspect that if LI 10409 is used then you would need to use Actual Material Costs rather than default costs.
Very good thread! with some great information!!
Once again, I have learned from the LEEDuser community. Please feel free to add or dispute my understanding of this credit. I think we can all agree that v4 has made MR credits much more "interesting" for project teams.
best,
Dave

My understanding from other instructions and LI 10409 is that if your are pursuing Option 1 you can complete the calculator based on the number of qualifying products, without necessarily including any cost information.

Thank you all for your comments. Summer, I now see where the Calculator specifies that for Option 2.
Yes, it seems like LI 10409 overrules the reference guide and allows for "equipment and machinery in CSI divisions 11, 21-28 and other specialty divisions." Since I am pursuing Option 1 for my project, I can complete the calculator with the # of qualifying products (without having to provide cost info).
