Weather Measurement Station

Hi,

Does anyone have experience or advice with installing temporary weather stations to gather data? We have a couple of projects coming up on existing occupied sites, and I would like to get what data I can from the sites to supplement the city weather file which is, as always, measured absolutely miles from site. There are thousands of items available on Amazon and quite possibly none of them are really suitable beyond home use. Recommendations would be great

Thanks!

Penny

You might take a look at Onset computing – they have a few weather station kits. We’ve used their Hobo data loggers over the years, but don’t have direct experience with the weather station. Another possible source would be Vernier software – they also have some weather stations that are less expensive and were developed for science curricula. Again, no personal experience, but they have good reputations. From: P

Hey Penny! I built a weather station for some of our research a few years ago now, and I did use the onset weather station. The only thing I failed to get connected at the time that I really wanted was an outdoor CO2 measurement, but there was really nothing offered at that time that would work for me, there may be more now! I got the HOBO U30 USB Weather Station Starter Kit, with a 2 meter tripod, and I seperately used a PurpleAir PA-II sensor to measure PM levels. I also have used some creative tactics to be able to temporarily install them on roofs without hurting the roofing membrane, if you looking at a roof mounted installation.  Happy to talk more about this if you'd like - h.jauregui@perkinseastman.com!

My dad uses a weather station from Davis Instruments (www.davisinstruments.com) on his farm. It is a permanent (pole mounted) installation in that case, but might be able to be used as a temporary installation. It reports live data to a website and I think he has access to trend data. Depending on the level of investment and number of projects it will be used on, they might have an option that would work for you. Hello, We did some work with the Dept of Education in Hawaii on figuring out the best sensors and weather stations – Loisos + Ubbelohde led this for us and were key in that assessment. http://www.coolshadow.com/ You can contact Nathan Brown or Susan Ubbelohde or George Loisos. They are wonderful F
