NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

VRF Outdoor Fan Motor - Electric Efficiency

Hi! Many local LEED Consultants have the same doubt related to VRF Systems when modeling per ASHRAE 90.1-2007 and regarding mandatory provisions. The first one is which is the system we must use as equivalent of VRF for the proposed building and the second one is do the Fan Motor of the Outdoor Units Compressors need to comply with the electric efficiencies per Table 10.8?. We know that single-phase motors are exempt but what about three-phase ones?. Thanks so much for your help.

Not sure if I am interpreting the first part of your question correctly so I will provide three answers. If you mean which is the equivalent baseline system - The baseline system is always defined by G3.1.1. VRFs tend to be all electric systems so use the electric column in Table G3.1.1A. Depending on the area and number of floors it should be a System #4, #6 or #8. If you mean how do we model a VRF system if the software does not do so explicitly - You should model VRF systems with software that can directly model those systems. If this is not possible you will need to use a published work around or provide a thorough narrative describing how you have modeled the system. If you mean what is the mandatory VRF minimum efficiency since it is not in the 6.8.1 tables - Since it is not listed, technically there is no mandatory minimum. However, ASHRAE 90.1-2010 does list minimum efficiencies for these systems which could serve as a guide. I would not be at all concerned about the fan motors in the outdoor units. These fans are not scrutinized for compliance with this mandatory provision.

Marcus, thanks so much! you have just answered all my questions and cleared all my doubts. I was already aware of ASHRAE 2010 requirements regading VRF so we will look forward for this standard in order to get ready for LEED v4. Thanks again,
