Strategies for Streamlining Sustainable Materials
September 24th, 2020
2pm - 3pm ET (11am - Noon PT)

This session seeks to share emerging approaches to cutting through the complexity of specifying and delivering sustainable materials on building projects. Selecting products and writing specifications that support a project’s sustainability goals can be a daunting task. However, specs and the unifying language of CSI divisions are where the magic happens. Time spent evaluating the studio’s awareness of product codification and master specs can go a long way to meeting sustainability goals – rating system based, office goals, etc. – as well as streamlining the efforts to research and apply criteria. Specs also provide a huge opportunity to enhance the professional development of design professionals. When of CSI divisions and specs are used as a tool for teaching – about sustainability, about coordinating key product criteria, and as an enforcement guide during construction administration to track supplied materials, there is a “win-win” for sustainability and for professional development. Jill Maltby-Abbott and Erica Weeks will partner to share DLR Group and Hastings Architecture’s best practices and developing processes underway in their respective organizations.

About the presenters

Erica Weeks, Associate Principal and Director of Sustainability at Hastings Architecture (Nashville, TN).
Erica serves as the company-wide sustainability resource, applying her previous experience as a project architect, project manager and construction administrator to all cross-discipline aspects of sustainable development.  She earned her first LEED AP credential in 2006 and has facilitated the sustainability process on over 180 projects, under the array of available rating systems.  Erica has a keen ability to create synergies between disciplines, execute the calculations required to forward ideas, and provide project-based mentorship to design professionals, with the overall goals of making sustainability inherent to the design/construction process and fostering the education of the next generation of design professionals.  In 2017, Erica was named one of Nashville Business Journal’s Women of Influence, in the category of Inspiration/Mentoring, for her on-going support of professional education within Hastings and beyond.

Jill Maltby-Abbott, AIA, WELL AP
Jill is an architect and WELL accredited professional who brings her passion for the design story, human health, and wellbeing to every project.
“Some of most important elements of bringing a design to life are the materials we select to formalize our design. The materials we engage with have an environmental and human health impact, and it’s vital to be mindful of the far-reaching impacts our material decisions will have.”
Jill primarily focuses on design for the firm’s Retail/Mixed Use and Workplace studios. She is a steward of well thought-out material selection, advocating for the use of carbon-conscious products that balance building performance standards with environmental and human health requirements. As a self-proclaimed materials enthusiast, Jill believes bringing the culture of transparency and evidence will continue to elevate why great design is critical for buildings and beyond.
