We are attempting to use Tally on a couple projects and are wondering how others are using the tool in their design process. If any experienced users out there would be willing to have a brief phone conversation I would appreciate it. Thanks
You rely on LEEDuser. Can we rely on you?

Hi Kate. We’ve used Tally on 3 projects and are using it on several more. Email me at kanderson@lmnarchitects.com and we can set up a time to talk.

Our team has been testing out Tally and One Click on a few projects with 2-3 completed now and several others in progress.
We have instituted different approaches on projects, based on client/team interest, design schedule, and interest to explore different structural solutions. Our Tally LCA/Therm work on SeaTac helped create the business case to shift from an all-steel system to a hybrid timber/steel system (~15% overall reduction in embodied carbon).
Happy to answer questions. sean.quinn@hok.com
We just renewed our single seat of Tally for a second year (we're ~100 employees in 2 offices). So far we have/or planning to utilized Tally for:
- LEEDv4 documentation on a health clinic
- LBC embodied carbon analysis for a small TI project
- Prototype studies for a typical school wing
- Smaller material studies (cladding/assembly type comparisons)
- Evaluating substitution requests during CA
If you’re planning a call I would love to be included and appreciate hearing your insights for each tool and your approach for using them.
One Interesting example I would like to hear more detail on is the ‘The Tale of Five Bricks’ mentioned in the Spotlight Report on Embodied Carbon.
Also any suggestions on further reading and/or the business cases you’re making for reducing embodied carbon, I’m all ears.

I would also be interested in a call to knowledge share. We have been experimenting with Tally for two years and would love to hear about other experiences.
I would love to listen in on this conversation.
Hi folks,
Good timing--we just had an SDL webinar (on Fitwel 2.1) that we were planning for June get postponed to July. So we have an available window at 2pm eastern on June 18 when we can host a call on experiences with Tally.
Kate, Kjell--would that time work for you? (We can record this, so if others can't make that time, they can watch after.)
We also have an interesting opportunity here--he hasn't chimed in yet, but Rod Bates, one of the creators of Tally, is in this group. We can ask if he's willing to lead part of the call, or just let this be a user-led session, and he can listen in (and maybe help answer questions?).
Any preferences on how we run this? Kate? Rod? others?
This is great timing. We have a summer intern from Carnegie Mellon starting on Monday. She will be spending 2 months using Tally to help us compare and optimize our more common wall assemblies in addition to doing a building LCA for LEED (our first one). Would it be ok for her to listen in with me?

Nadav and all,
I am happy to help pass on some information, but the time to put into a formal presentation that will be recorded is beyond my time availability – maybe others can do it? I would be happy to participate if its informal… maybe just a zoom call with a few people, would be easier to schedule and execute.

I have been looking for ways to streamline the analysis and optimization of typical walls using WUFI a bit and just keeping our eyes on Tally. i would love to listen/watch during a session with someone ahead of us in its implementation.
I hope nobody would mind if I join the call. This sort of raw feedback from those working on real-world applications would be incredibly helpful as we evaluate future development tracks.
Hey all!
I'm also interested in listening in on this call moving forward! We're planning to start Tally on two upcoming projects and could use some insight from the group :)
- Heather Jauregui
We are very early on with assessments for two different projects so I don’t know that we have a lot to show in a formal webinar way. One is a whole building assessment and one is a comparison of discreet building elements. We have a lot of questions at this point more so than answers. Maybe better for more of a working call/roundtable.

Ok--we'll work on setting this up as a working/talking session instead of a prepared presentation. We can keep it within the "safe space" of this group. If you're interested, hold the date, and we'll be back in touch with details on signing up. June 18, 2pm eastern time.
I would also be interested in participating in a call. We are starting to use Tally in the office for LEED as well as for a research project looking at typical building components.
HOK would be happy to share our case study experience with Autocase, Tally and One Click to illustrate uses of tools and applied research for structure design. KT has been hosting great webinars so confident that they could contribute expertly. No doubt that Simon with Autocase and Panu with OneClick would be happy to contribute if developers are welcome. - Sean
Hi Nadav - It looks like there is a conflict for this time and date that would affect participation from Kjell, as well as others who may wish to attend the webinar on the AIA’s Guide to Integrating Building Performance Simulation, also held at 2pm ET on June 18.

Too much good stuff going on – good problem to have!

I'm planning on joining the Integrating Building Performance Simulation webinar Heather mentioned as well. It would be great if this working/talking session can be scheduled on a different day! Yes, too much good stuff!
Hi,
I work with Nadav at BuildingGreen, and he asked me to create a Doodle poll to figure out a better time for the Tally LCA meeting. Please take a moment to mark which times work best for you:
Take the Doodle poll! (note the time zone)
Please respond by 12pm EDT on Tuesday 6/12. Thanks!

Thank you, Andrea! To clarify, deadline for the Doodle poll is tomorrow (Wednesday, 6/12) at noon eastern.
Wow--lots of interest in this topic. We can repeat this web session if necessary. At this point Thursday, 6/20 at 11:00 eastern is ahead by a half-length.
Hi all
You might also want to check out CAALA, developed by a German software company that has developed. CAALA does energy and life cycle cost analysis. It is for early phase design through plug ins for Rhino and Sketchup. The basic version is free and they do have an English option in their website. For now the database they have is for Dutch and German materials but they are interested in expanding to the US. Through an internal Arcadis/CallisonRTKL program I have been one of their startup “mentors”. They are a small group of people but very dedicated.

Check it out if you have time and feel free to provide them (or me) any input that you might have.
Thanks

Andrea:
I will be out of the office June 20. Is it ok if my sustainability coordinator, who just completed a Tally analysis on one of our projects, participates in the call in my stead? She's not officially part of this group, is why I ask.
Thanks,
Kristian Kicinski
P.s. Is there a way to respond to someone without cc'ing everyone?
Hi Kristian,
No--we've decided to keep this web-meeting within the Safe Space of the network, so people who are NOT experts can share their adventures, warts and all. If we can confirm a secure way to share a recording within the network, we'll try to record it, so at least you can see it.
And there is clearly a ton of interest in Tally, so I'm sure that there will be more opportunities!
To respond to one person, you can go to the main forum page and click on the "Group Members" tab. That will show you the names and email addresses of everyone in the network.
Finally, since we don't have an expert presenter for this, we'll need volunteers to show their work and get input. (Rod did say he'll be on the call, so we'll have an expert who can chime in...) Anyone want to volunteer to show what you've attempted and get input on your efforts?
Nadav

- This webmeeting was part of the SDL "Safe Space"--please treat it as such. That means that the lessons are to be shared, but nothing attributed to individuals or firms without their permission. We also checked with everyone who shared on the video, and got their permission to share it (with an edit to remove one short segment).
- It's not a formal presentation, just a chat session with expert input. So the video is a bit rough. The technical content starts about 5 minutes in.
- If you'd like to share this with someone else in your firm who uses Tally, please only do after explaining the safe space rule, and use your discretion. Please don't post this link anywhere, internally or publicly.

I have a newbie question -- We're using Tally for the first time to document for LEED v4 MRc1. Is it permissible to simply run two materials analyses (baseline and the actual building) on the same model as separate reports and manually compare? That would be much faster than creating two different design models and then use Tally’s design option comparison report.
For context, this project is using mass timber structure so we think that will be the major strategy that demonstrates compliance with this credit.
Thanks!
We’ve done the analysis on 3 projects thus far but haven’t yet received comments on any from the USGBC. I believe we’ve used design options within a single Revit model and used the ‘Design Option Comparison’ to generate a report comparing them. I’m guessing what you propose is fine as GBCI is still figuring out how to review this kind of analysis.

Questions on documenting LCA for LEED:
1. The LEED guidelines use "structure and enclosure" and Tally guide uses "core and shell and structure". Should stairs be included or not?
2. Using Tally the On-site Construction [A5] scope should be included, correct?
