Starting Monthly Network Calls: Nov 15, 1:00pm eastern

Hi folks,

We're kicking off a new way for us to collaborate as a network: monthly web-based conference calls. The first one will be on Friday, Nov 15 at 1:00 eastern time. The topic will be "Sustainability and the Small Firm: Practices in Transition" -- which is the name of the proposal James has submitted (and gotten first-round approved) for AIA 2020 in LA.

We've already started the conversation about this topic on the forum, so feel free to check that out. And here's the description that James submitted:

Despite AIA’s priority statements, the updated Code of Ethics including “Obligations to the Environment,” and incremental performance improvements in projects submitted to the DDx, the overall impact on the profession and built environment remains minor. We have information – the annual COTE Top 10, COTE Habits of High Performance Firms report, 2030 Commitment signatories’ Sustainable Action Plans, and COTE Top Ten Toolkit, but can these tools transform firm culture and the profession, and convince reluctant clients in small firm environments? How do we leverage these tools to make meaningful and lasting change?

We will discuss motivations - from AIA awards, Architect Top 50, or the random opportunity of a challenging project. Different leadership approaches evaluated include hiring experienced sustainability experts, developing expertise by investing in interested and motivated staff, or requiring sustainable education for new hires. Internal and external challenges and pitfalls addressed include reluctant clients/consultants, time/budget constraints, and unicorn client myth. We will also discuss the unique position of small firms – with challenges like lower overhead time and ‘multiple hat’ generalist staff, to the opportunities provided by greater flexibility and less hierarchy. We will discuss the roadmap small firms have developed to transform their culture and integrate sustainability in design.

Thanks to James for kicking this off and agreeing to help lead this call. I hope you can join us. If you're at your desk and can turn on a camera, it might almost feel like we're face-to-face!

And if you can't join us this month, put in a placeholder for next month's call: Dec 20, 1pm eastern.

I've got it on my calendar, looking forward to the call! I was confused about whether it was assumed that small firms were transitioning to become larger, or that we are transitioning into more sustainable. Thanks for the link to the thread- that cleared it up. (-:   It's an interesting topic, and applicable even to firms that were founded as sustainable design practices, but that strive for continual improvement towards matching our practice more closely to our ideals. In architecture as in life, I have to say.

Hello Small Firm SDL folks - we just had a great call with context, examples and discussion around the topic of Sustainability and the Small Firm: Practices in Transition. See the notes from the call here. As you read them please note any questions that arise for you, similar experiences you may have had and topics for future discussions. Start a new Post with a question for the group to respond to by clicking the Start a New Topic button on the top left-hand side of this page. Some of the key issues were around data collection, using the COTE Top-10 Measures of Success, internal road maps for guiding a firm's sustainability initiatives, etc. The expertise and experience within this group is impressive as is the willingness to share struggles and challenges!

Hello! As part of the evolution of our monthly calls, I’ll be posting a follow-up each month with the action items from the call. This helps those who missed the call stay in the loop and serves as a reminder for those who participated. Here are the takeaways for this month:     Please continue your conversations on the SDLS Peer Network Forum! This forum is an excellent way for you to pick the brains of other leaders in your field. There was a lot of great conversation on this call and we hope to see you engaging in similar discussions via the forum.     We've put together a Doodle Poll to help us see what times work for most of the group when choosing a consistent time for these calls. Thank you to those of you who have already filled it out! If you haven’t yet, please do so. It won’t take more than a minute or two.     We would like to hear from you what topics would be engaging for the group on future calls. If you have an idea, please post it here, or email me at jennifer@buildinggreen.com if you prefer. Thanks! Jen
