My factory project has cold storage (10oC) and a freezer (-13oC). For the factory, we use ASHRAE 90.1-2016 as normal but for the cold storage and freezer, what is the standard to set up the baseline? I heard about the "Energy Modeling Guideline for Cold Storage and Refrigerated Warehouse Facilities 2013" of the IACSC. I'm wondering if we have to use this guideline to set up the baseline or not. And In case we don't claim the saving for the cold storage and freezer, can we not use this guideline? like we just treat those spaces as a process load in ASHRAE 90.1. Thanks for your advice.

I don't think you are required to use these guidelines. If you model the process load identiacally in both models that should be accepted. If you want to claim any savings for this process load then you should use the guidelines. Depending upon the energy end use breakdown of the facility you may or may not need to show savings in the refrigerated warehouse section to score the number of points you may need for the level of LEED certification you seek.

Dear Marcus,
We have a similar cold storage refrigerated warehouse where 1/2 of the warehouse is the cold storage.
If we claim the refrigeration as process load, than the "baseline" refrigeration should be identical as in the proposed?
Best regards, Norbert

The refrigeration is a process load. Unless you wish to claim savings associated with any process load they must be modeled identically.

Thanks a lot! Unfortunately within the IACSC 2013 guide for refrigerated facilities we can't figure out exactly how to modell the baseline cooling system, so we have to stick with the identical proposed process load. We hope an updated version of the guide will come out sooner or later with more details.

We did it once and it was accepted by the reviewer. It was a LEED 2009 project I think. We were able to show over 30% savings, mostly from the refrigeration load.
