We have patient courtyards that serve four (4) patient units each. Two (2) ground floor patient units have direct access to the courtyard while the other two (2) second level units have access to the courtyard via stairs or elevators and a short corridor connection. I'm assuming this meets the 'direct' criteria but I have not found a definition for "direct access". Is there any information/description to define what is acceptable as "direct access"?

The two ground floor units qualify but I'm not sure about the second level. The RG defines 'direct access' in the glossary. Can your second floor inpatients go from their rooms to the courtyard without going through public areas or service areas?
