My project, a vast Industrial layout in nature; Only the administrative building is applying for LEED (… and yes! the corresponding site boundary around the building too), I have been striving at a last attempt to sway the client to accept the SSc3 – Open Space attempt for the LEED boundary site.
The original plan was to have NO vegetation at all. Which in turn is excellent for achieving 100% value for the WEc1 – Outdoor water Use reduction, thereby achieving the threshold and gaining on the 1 bonus Regional Priority point… for 3points total.
(WEc1 is one of our available RP designated bonus points per region)
Major Concern:
If by attempting the SSc3 – Open Space credit with a vegetated space requirement of 7.5% of the entire site, does this not negate the opportunity at attaining 100% for WEc1 despite our intended strategy of using local and drought resistant plants. I had been such an advocate for the SSc3 inclusion but if it would have negative effects on a potential 3 points, then I would discontinue pursuing this credit.

Having vegetated areas only impacts the outdoor water use credit if your project irrigates. If you're able to design with plantings that don't require any irrigation, you're still set to earn all points under WE Cr 1. This is possible in many locations, but not all. Alternatively, you can irrigate and still earn all WE Cr 1 points if all of your irrigation water comes from a non-potable source, such as collected rainwater, or recycled water from the municipality, treated greywater from the building, etc.
If you have plants that require irrigation (past that needed for establishment), and your only source is regular, potable water, then yes, you should choose your battles. Are you also looking at the Protect and Restore Habitat credit, or is that one out of reach b/c of the SF requirement?

Thanks Emily,... just needed that assurance and the little nudge that this was a safe bet. I guess we'll just need to consult more on our choice of plants and ensure the landscaper is on point; we can't afford to spend money and effort to get 1 point and Jeopardize 3 points that was literarily with no extra expense or effort.
