I have two questions regarding heat island reduction credit:
1. I would like to confirm if in LEEDv4 roof area under ventilation ducts and pipes should be excluded from the calculations just like area with mechanical equipment fixed to the roof surface. In our case the roof area under the ducts and pipes will be covered with a high reflective material complying with SRI requirement.
2. There is a terrace on the roof with tables and chairs. A part of this terrace has a glass overhang. How should we treat the roof terrace under the glass overhang and the overhang itself?

Hi Agata,
1. If the roof area in question is visible on the roof plan, I would include it. If not, exclude it from the calcs just like if mech equipment were sitting directly on it. Since your roofing underneath complies anyway, you're probably fine either way. If the reviewers disagree with whichever path you choose, they'll likely explain why, but note that it doesn't affect compliance (assuming it does not actually affect compliance for your project).
2. I haven't seen this question come up before. There is a LEED Interpretation #5383 from v2009 that addressed glass canopies extending from the building over site hardscape. That one concluded that the glass could be ignored, but not the hardscape underneath. I would think that logic would apply here, too. Whatever material is in that rooftop seating area should comply. You could try providing a narrative to the reviewers and citing the LI mentioned above for your reasoning. If you don't want to risk that, you could email LEED Coach and ask if that approach meets the intent of the credit and see if they'll agree prior to submitting it.
