We are working on a retail project and the mechanical designer insists on using a split VRF system. However the Mitsubishi systems he recommends do not meet the allowable refrigerant/ton set out by LEED.
Does anyone have any advice on what systems/manufactures can be used or how to accommodate a VRF only building for this credit?

Kristopher, my understanding is that VRF systems can be a challenge under this credit because of the relatively large volume of refrigerant used in the piping. Hopefully the efficiency is helpful in earning points under EAc1. I don't have any specific tips, but I'll ask around. And please post back if you've found anything workable.

Any split system will require a significant amount of refrigerant, which due to quantity may mean this credit is not achievable. Unless a different manufacturer specifies a different refrigerant with a lower impact, a split system may not align with pursuing this credit. If you do consider a different system type that requires less refrigerant, there may be an energy penalty. So you may just end up trading LEED points elsewhere.
