Pilot-Credits MRpc80:Environmentally preferable interior finishes and furnishings

Qualifying Products

We're preparing to submit this pilot credit for a light-duty laboratory facility. We found, as others have noted, that the broad reach of CSI Divisions 9 and 12 are a significant stumbling block to achieving what we perceive to be the purest fulfillment of the credit, as many of the product categories in these Divisions have not yet mustered independent third-party certifications. In our case, specifically, our furniture selections were nearly all ANSI/BIFMA e3 qualified. Taken alone, we achieved a 61% ratio for the furniture items. However, when we added in the cost of extensive laboratory casegoods - which we could not find bearing an acceptable third-party certification - our percentage dropped dramatically, to 35%. We limited our scope to Division 12, as Division 9 yielded no compliant products. Other additions from Division 12 brought the total down further. Realizing that this may a somewhat unique case, given the preponderance of laboratory casegoods, I'm curious to know if anyone has gotten a clearer interpretation of exactly what is to be included in the calculation - and if others who have tried to follow the letter of the credit have had similar difficulties generally finding enough volume of certified product to make it work?

Tom, Sorry to hear of your challenges. Likewise, we have also had little success with Div 9 products, especially in cases when conventional drywall and framing materials represents a fair portion of that budget. Furthermore, we've (unfortunately) heard/seen nothing to indicate a portion of Div 12 can be excluded from this credit's evaluation, although we'd imagine this criteria was written with more conventional office applications in mind. As Div 12 encompasses a number of pre-manufactured specialty products it is understandable this would pose a barrier for laboratory and medical projects as well as many institutional, hospitality unique civic projects (such as prisons hotels and performing arts/museum applications) where specialty casework, fixed seating or other unique items could be a significant portion of the Div 12 budget.

Does anyone have feedback following their project undergoing review for this credit? I am curious if there have been any lessons learned? thx!
