NC-v4 INc1:Innovation

Purchasing Lamps Innovation Credit

For the Purchasing Lamps Innovation credit the requirements section states: "Must meet the exemplary performance criteria of the base credit (an average 35 picograms per lumen hour or less)."

What is the base credit the requirement is referring too? I'm not seeing a base purchasing lamps credit in the BD&C offering.

Hi Jason, it's definitely not clear from that webpage, but the Innovation credit is referencing the LEED-EBOM rating system. Here's the base EBOM credit: https://www.usgbc.org/node/2613477?view=guide&return=/credits/existing-buildings/v4/material-&-resources.

The base credit is in LEED O+M: Existing Buildings | v4 - LEED v4 Purchasing - lamps

If yo are using this as an ID credit for a BD+C project, do you have to meet the Exemplary performance level of 35 picograms or the base credit of 70?

The 35 threshold is required for the ID credit. It states it in a box on the main page for the credit on the link Jason posted above, though they could definitely do a better job of being more specific to the ID approach.

Regarding this innovation credit, should we also account for those two-head or three-head emergency floodlight fixtures?

Mon, 07/29/2019 - 01:03

Hi Edgar, I'd include them. I don't know of any exemptions for emergency fixtures.

Thanks, Trista.  Also, how should we formulate the lamp purchasing plan if all the fixtures to be installed in a Core&Shell project are LED fixtures (not lamps)?  Should it be based on purchasing new LED fixtures whenever the fixtures naturally go bad?  Cause I don't think we can replace diodes if they start to go bad, normally they would just get repaired.  I reviewed this credit in detail from the O+M handbook, but what they ask for is geared towards existing buildings that will be replaced by new low-mercury or mercury-free lamps (lamps not fixtures)

Here is something else to consider.  I was looking at this for an addition, but looks like we must address the whole building: "Please note that since LEED O+M is a whole building rating system, when attempting an Innovation in Design point for following a LEED O+M prerequisite or credit compliance path the strategy must be applied to the entire project building. For LEED Core and Shell projects please provide a copy of a legally binding tenant sales and lease agreement documentation that the tenants meet the requirement of the LEED O+M strategy."

In the case that all lights within the project and LED, and thus none contain Mercury, is the calculator still required to be submitted? How do you go about filling this out? The only language I am seeing is that "Lamps containing no mercury may be counted only if their energy efficiency at least equals that of their mercury-containing counterparts" from https://www.usgbc.org/credits/new-construction-core-and-shell-schools-new-construction-retail-new-construction-healthca-70?view=language&return=/credits/New%20Construction/v4

My project is following NC and is a major renovation. However one floor will not be renovated and will keep its existing lamps. Can the project take the innovation purchasing lamps if all the new lamps we purchase for the other floors (that are renovated) fullfill the credit purchasing lamps?

I concur with the comments in this thred, this ID credit is based on LEED O+M Purchasing - Lamps which specifically states, "for all mercury-containing lamps purchased for the building and associated grounds within the project boundary." So you will need to include existing and new, interior and exterior, hard-wired and portable (task lights) in the calculation.
