The project I’m working on is a new construction on a University campus. The University has taken considerable measures to provide a welcoming and well-designed pathway around the building for students that will eventually lead to a unique feature of the campus - the Harborwalk along a bay - so we felt this pilot credit would be great to attempt. Perhaps a compliance option could be to include signage or attention to path surfaces or a map with a route for occupants in the building if they want to take a mile walk during lunch or ensuring that the path can be used by bikes as well as walkers.
The project faced some challenges due to a very unique shell with curved auditoriums and recital halls ‘protruding’ from the primary façade. The building was also oriented in such a way that facades were not directly facing adjacent streets. These made calculating distances to street centerline and public spaces to the building façade a bit open to interpretation.
We are in the process of submitting this credit for review and are hopeful the reviewers will acknowledge some of the difficulties we faced when documenting a very unique project site and building footprint.
