Pilot-Credits MRpc87:Verified Construction & Demolition Recycling Rates

Pilot Credit 87 - Verified Construction and Demolition Rates

Documentation of this credit was easy because we are using a hauler who has a CORR certified facility that is near to our job.  We tried this pilot credit once before and did not achieve it because the drivers took the waste to the facility nearest the project, which was not their CORR certified facility.   I think the verified recycling rate is very important, so I am hoping to see more facilities become certified.  I feel that a focus on the waste streams is pertinent to shifting the marketplace and driving momentum on hard to recycle material streams, at the same time a huge focus needs to stay on the commingled materials handlers, as they handle the bulk of materials. Maybe inclusion of certified facilities is a great way to go to give more legitimacy to commingled waste hauling while still focusing on driving progress with individual materials streams.

I agree that we need more facilities becoming 3rd party verified. We are not seeing processors in the DC market jump onboard. This credit is achievable when you have a verified processor in your area. Commingled waste is typically the only feasible option in most cities even with live load options. I agree the that sourcing end use for material streams is the most challenging part for processors in today’s market especially when trying to meet the v4 requirements.

Did you have an issue convincing the hauler to haul waste only from your project site so that the weight measurement reflected only the weight from the project?  Did they charge extra for doing this?

Is there any other equivalent certification (besides CORR) that can be verified to meet the compliance for -third-party verified facility recycling rate for this credit?

I agree that when you have a local approved facility then the credit confirmation is straight forward. We are in the DC/MD/VA area and have an approved facility that offers service to most of the project areas we work in. The reporting is straight forward and I have not yet heard that there is a cost increase for them. I know that the facility offers both collection and just sorting if a different company collects from a site. That makes it helpful if the project team likes a specifica hauler. They can keep them and just have the haulers take the construction waste to the proper facility. I am wondering how rigorous the process is for a facility to become certified.

Seems like this is a straight forwward credit for project teams using a Third-party certified hauler. This improves consistency and accuracy of recycled reporting. Wondering what it takes for facilities to get Third party certified since we don't have that many in our area (Austin, TX).

I also agree about needing more facilities taking the plunge into CORR certification for verified recycling rates. The CORR facility we went with ( Recovery 1, based out of Tacoma,WA) is the only certified facility that reaches the southern part of our region on the westside of Washington. Then up north there is another facility lautenbach in Mt Vernon I believe that is also CORR certified. However, now we are finding that the certified diversion rates for Recovery 1 are less than ideal under new ownership - however through discussions we have determined that it is because they are often filling a gap in the market place leading to lower diversion rates exclusive of ADC. This was an unintended consequence of going with verified rates, we found that we couldn't rely on commingled waste to get us to our diversion goals. So we implemented more source separated strategies, and waste reduction onsite to mitigate this. If we truly want to incentivise teams to choose verified facilities, then we should also anticipate lower diversion rates for commingled loads and open communication with these facilities to improve.
