hello
yesterday I check out the USGBC website for a current list of available pilot credit strategies. how can i use this list? some item were closed or modified and other were initail posting

You cannot pursue the closed pilot credits, but the initial and modified can be pursued. Once your project is registered you need to register for the pilot credit before you can pursue it - the sooner the better as once the credit closes you can no longer register, but after you register you can pursue it even if it closes (meaning that no more projects can register.)
There are is no limit to how many pilot credits you can register for, and there is no obligation to pursue a pilot credit you register for.
