PFAS is in everything and you – Please join

Hello good people and fabulous troublemakers,

PFAS is in everything. In May, the NY Times published an article about this, along with the governments work to remove it from drinking water. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/10/climate/six-things-to-know-about-forever-chemicals.html

As you may know, a working group has been gathering over the last months to understand if we can use the power of our voice to raise awareness about these chemicals, highlight policy that is in place or forming, and engage the materials and building community to push elimination of these 15,000 per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances.

As made evident with what we saw in the adoption of Health Product Declarations (HPD’s) & Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s), our hope is to integrate comprehensive health and environmental information regarding PFAS into manufacturers consideration and our daily practice for product selection.

We have done this kind of advocacy as a group around HPDs years ago. Lets do this again! We need YOU!

Hence, the ASK:  we hope your firm will add your name to the letter as a signatory to our ‘Eliminating PFAS in Building Materials’ pledge that has been outlined by the Building Green PFAS Working Group Members. It is an open letter addressed to Manufacturers stating that we will soon be requesting confirmed testing reports of zero PFAS (no small request, we know) , as PFAS presence can be elusive in product literature and other healthy material reports, in order to make more informed decisions when specifying their products.

We would like to gather signatures from firms by EOD 10/15, with the current plan to distribute to manufacturers promptly after and potentially share any insights at GreenBuild when we folks can meet.

Thank you for reading and for your consideration!

If you have any questions/ comments, or would like to join the working group, feel free to reach out to Prairna and/or Pauline directly via email.
