Passive House Less Expensive than Traditional Building

In the Passive House session at the Winter Summit, I spoke about a Massachusetts DOER report that found that meeting the new energy code in MA (passive house or better in most cases) is cheaper for some building types than traditional construction. Some of you asked to see the report. It was a power point show. On page 34 of this slide deck there is a table.

Primary Schools 

1.1 to 2.8% cost incremental

26 to 39% GH gas emissions reduction

Secondary Schools

0 to 0.5% cost incremental

34 to 39 % GH gas emissions reduction

Small Office

3.4 to 4.5% cost incremental

25 to 50% GH gas emissions reduction

Large Office

-4 to -4.6 % LESS cost incremental

31 to 33 % GH gas emissions reduction

Lab/Office

-.07 to -1.2% LESS cost incremental

29 to 67% GH gas emissions reduction

Multi-family

1.9 to 2.9% cost incremental

45 % GH gas emissions reduction
