Outside webinar--Sierra Club on Wood, Forests, and Embodied Carbon

Hi folks,

I wanted to let people know about this webinar--I've heard it's good. If you do catch it please let us know what you think. Jason has offered to do a private version for our Peer Networks as well--I'd love to know how interested people would be in that opportunity.

November 14, 2019 from noon to 1 PM Pacific Time

TO REGISTER: https://act.sierraclub.org/events/details?formcampaignid=7010Z000001wQLBQA2

TO JOIN WEBINAR: https://zoom.us/j/563392393

This program explains why increased forest protection and improved stewardship are key to addressing the climate crisis and reducing the embodied carbon of wood products — and how the green building movement can help.

Topics include:

  • Forests’ role in combating climate change
  • Is increased wood use and mass timber construction beneficial or detrimental?
  • Forest carbon: what it is, how it works and why it determines the real carbon footprint of wood products
  • Climate-friendlier forestry and practical wood procurement strategies to promote it
  • Illegally logged and traded wood products: the climate connection + a new and innovative approach to avoiding illegal wood in building construction

I will not be able to attend the 14th November webinar, but I am definitely interested to attend if one can be arranged for our group. Thanks for sharing the information Vandita

Hi All. I watched it when it first came out in September. It’s worth watching. If we are planning on transitioning away from concrete and steel to wood, it’s really important to specify the right wood. The carbon footprint/sequestration for wood varies a lot depending on forest practices. Is forest products industry is taking steps to decarbonize their operations?  Are they electrifying and sourcing renewable energy?  How are they eliminating fossil fuel combustion? from felling trees, to transportation, to milling and shipping product, they use a lot of energy. even for carbon-based materials like wood, we should be requesting carbon neutrality plans. a carbon 'good' product will only get better if it's operations are carbon neutral too. other industries need to be encouraged to carbon neutrality too.  Liberty Steel aims to be carbon neutral by 2030: https://www.energylivenews.com/2019/10/29/liberty-steel-aims-to-be-carbon-neutral-by-2030/ This probably isn't an either/or situation and we'll need both.

Good question. It’s true that it takes a lot of energy to harvest, transport, mill and dry lumber. Harvesting and transporting trees definitely rely on diesel and other fossil fuels and a lot of the energy at the mill comes from burning wood waste to generate heat, steam, and electricity. This is usually counted as carbon neutral - counting on planting trees to balance out the carbon released from burning. This is not a great argument particularly in the short term. See this article in Science Alert https://www.sciencealert.com/us-europe-labels-burning-forest-biomass-wood-carbon-neutral-renewable If you just consider the carbon emissions from getting the wood from the forest to you without considering the carbon sequestration question, the latest ICE database puts it at between .3 - .5 kg of carbon emissions per kg of product. FYI softwood framing lumber weighs between 1 - 1.5 kg / bd ft. So you’re right, we shouldn’t forget about the carbon released by the forest product industry. It is definitely a lot lower than steel, but it’s not nothing. But the webinar focuses more on the total carbon stored in the forest that the trees are harvested from, and that how the forest is managed - clear cut size, length of harvest cycle (rotation) number of roads created, stream buffer size, etc. - has a huge impact on how much carbon is emitted or sequestered in the trees and the soil of the forest. Margaret, I will need to connect with Jason and ask! Thanks for the question. -RoseAnn

Wed, 01/08/2020 - 16:19

Hi Margaret, I realized afterward that you may be asking about having others in the office attending the webinar. Here is a bit more information: Generally these webinars are for Peer Network members only. But, as this was a public webinar prior, it would be fine to share this one with colleagues. The link above to register will only work for current Peer Network members. Once you register, if you would like to have others in your office join you to view the webinar, that could work for this one! I hope this answers your question, feel free to email me if you have further questions. Best, RoseAnn
