Opportunity to help the DOD produce healthy, efficient, and resilient buildings

Hi Folks -

The "request for participation" email below is from Brendan Owens, who most of you know was at the USGBC for over 18 years, and is now the Chief Sustainability Officer for the US Dept of Defense. As I read the text, I couldn't help but think of this group as a deep well of expertise and experience that could undoubtedly help him in his efforts.

Key things to know about the event that they are organizing:

  • The deadline for expression of interest is this Friday, Feb 23, 2024.
  • It is entirely unpaid, so folks on the East coast are best positioned to be able to volunteer their in-person time
  • A clip from the request:

    • "a.Through this notice, DoD would like to receive expressions of interest from a range of non-governmental infrastructure experts to discuss collaboratively:

i.How DoD building criteria can be organized to drive integrated design and to provide the basis for addressing infrastructure resilience, clean and reliable energy, electrification, and indoor environmental quality.

ii.What market ready technologies, concepts, processes, and standards could be incorporated into DoD building criteria.

iii. What prescriptive requirements or other obstacles exist in DoD building criteria that could be eliminated or streamlined to meet desired performance standards."

  • The third item would particularly benefit from Green Commons folks who are (or whose firms are) already working with the DOD

I hope some of you are interested and able to share your expertise!

Brendan's email:

happy friday friends!

reaching out again to my favorite group of brains and troublemakers with a request to help our dod team update the unified facilities criteria (dod's building code). we are going to write a code that produces healthy, efficient, resilient buildings not by exception, but every single time - and we need your help.

if you're in a spot where you can help out, i'd be thrilled to see your ideas because they gave me a job that enables us to make them reality.

the process we need to follow to convene folks is, admittedly, a bit cumbersome but the scope and scale of the impact is, if we do our work right, something that will produce knock-on benefits beyond even dod's considerable footprint.

this is a link to our "request for participation" page. the plan is to use this as a lead-in to an early/mid april in person event where we'll put the framework together for the road map we need to evolve our ufcs. this expression of interest gives us the ability to invite people - but you can also just share an idea which we'll consider for adoption.

it's not exactly tagapalooza (for those of you who go back that far) but it's not entirely not tagapalooza either...

if you saw this earlier and missed the deadline - we extended. new deadline is 23-feb.

also - feel free to share far and wide - the more diverse and expert the room, the better the outcome!

hope to see you all soon!
