Open Letter to Address the Use of Electronic Air Cleaning Equipment in Buildings

Hey all - sorry I won't be able to join our call today. I had a client request an emergency meeting today (boo) because corporate mandated that they eliminate fossil fuel use from all their buildings (yay!) by 2025 and they've got a project underway that needs to pivot quickly.

Had I been able to join, I wanted to share this in case anybody hadn't seen it yet: https://medium.com/open-letter-to-address-the-use-of-electronic-air/no-to-ionizers-plasma-uvpco-bc1570b2fb9b

Full disclosure: One of my colleagues was involved in the writing of it, but it was joined on to by a number of researchers that have been very active in this field, including at least a couple ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force members.

I expect this debate to ramp up in the coming weeks months. There's going to be a land rush associated with the billions of dollars set aside for school improvements, and my inbox is already been spammed by companies claiming to qualify for these dollars, ranging from HVAC stuff to furniture (big eye roll there). On top of that, it looks like there's going to be some new misleading "research" released by at least one manufacturer that will be marketed well, but actually shows the technology performing really poorly compared to ventilation and filtration.

I cannot make today either, but agreed with Pete.  You probably aware of the Portland State study and recent work suggested while the ionizer might eleiminate some contaminants in the air, it may have some negative impact to your cadiovacular system, specifically variability of heart rate https://www.pdx.edu/news/new-research-uncovers-safety-concerns-some-air-purifiers-marketed-covid-19 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31473392/

Hi Pete, Thanks for sharing this! Kim brought it up on the call yesterday, and we agreed that it would be great to cross-post this notice to the Green Gurus list, because lots of people in the other networks are also in a position to advise schools on this kind of thing. Do you want to do that?

Thanks for sharing, Pete. Wish I had time to read through all the literature and get a cliff-notes version. Was specifically interested in the Sleiman M, Fisk WJ. Evaluation of Pollutant Emissions from Portable Air Cleaners (2021) report prepaired for CARB but couldn't find which manufacturers specifically were tested - perhaps because that information was intentionally excluded?
