EBOM-2009 MRc6:Solid Waste Management—Waste Stream Audit

Non recyclables in recycling stream

I think I know the answer but just want to double check. When performing a waste audit if you find food waste (for example) or large quantities of vinyl binders in the recyclables waste stream do you subtract those from the weight of the diverted recyclables and add them to the landfilled stream? They are recyclable of course if put in a composting stream or donated to Goodwill for example but not in this building's waste stream. Thanks.

Hi Blair, the audit results should reflect how things were found during the audit. So you wouldn't want to do any additional sorting or diverting. Instead you would want to show the amount of contamination in the landfill stream and/or the recycling stream. Knowing if people are mis-sorting certain items can be a useful piece of information that should be captured in the results summary. Hope this helps!
