We have some on-street parking, and a multistorey car park in our site. How do we calculate the number of preferred parking spaces for carpool or shared-use vehicles? Preferred spaces will be located in the multistorey car park. This is within 60m of some buildings but not all buildings. How do we go about meeting this requirement if we do not want to provide off-street parking closer to the buildings?

Elena, the minimum number of preferred parking spaces (carpool, shared-vehicle, or combination) is 10% of the total off-street parking spaces required by the local government for each non-residential and mixed-use building. These spaces must be within 60 meters of the buildings they serve, and there isn't much flexibility to alter that maximum distance requirement. If this is critical for your project and there are extenuating circumstances, you should discuss it informally with USGBC ND staff or take the formal CIR route.

Thanks Eliot. Does this mean that the multistorey car-park is considered off-street parking? All parking spaces required by local government will be located within the multistorey car park or on-street (limited number). Is my 10% calculated on the no. parking spaces within the multistorey car park?

Elena, yes, a parking structure is considered off-street parking. The 10% is calculated from the local government's required total number of spaces regardless of where the local government allows those spaces to be located.
