Peter,
Firstly, in your post you referred to SSc5.1, but I believe you meant to write SSc7.1
If that is the case then the 5 year canopy area of a NATIVE tree can count toward the credit. With that said, it must shade a hard scape area, be it the building or sidewalk/road etc...... If the building is merely shading the turf grass it cannot be counted.

I actually did mean for SSc5.1, and reposted under the forum for that credit after I realized my mistake.
The way I understand credit SS 5.1 is that turgrass cannot be counted toward native or creating habitat, but if a tree is native and planted in that same turfgrass area, can you count its canopy SF toward your area?

Hi Peter,
Whenever I do my calcs for this credit I calculate the area of the 5-year canopy, regardless of what it is planted in / surrounded by.
This has never caused an issue for me or my team. Hope this helps.
