Nadav Malin, Hon. AIA!!!!

It is with the greatest pleasure that I announce to this esteemed group the recognition of our very own and much-loved leader Nadav Malin as an Honorary AIA member. AIA COTE had the honor to serve as Nadav's sponsor and we are pleased and delighted with this outcome (but not surprised of course.) For the record, "The AIA recognizes the notable contributions and service of people outside of the architecture profession with Honorary Membership in the Institute." This recognition only goes to a handful of people each year.  Nadav will be celebrated at the AIA Conference in NYC this summer. Hopefully many of us will be there to celebrate with him. Three cheers! Hip hip hooray!!!

best regards

Mary Ann

Hi Guys, I am working on the fenestration performance values for the next code cycle (2019) and am trying to get a feel for what we are specifying across the climate zones currently (basically what are projects installing today to formulate some type of a context for the new values). If you guys could quick just look at the projects around you, on the computers, and send me: the Climate Zone, the System U-factor (or CoG U of glass), and the System SHGC (or glass SC), that would be super helpful. Thanks Leonard Sciarra, AIA, ASHRAE, LEEDap+ Senior Associate +1 312.577.6580 Direct +1 312.456.0123 Main +1 847.345.5619 Mobile Gensler 11 East Madison Street Suite 300 Chicago, Illinois 60602 USA .

Leonard, We are just bidding a project in ASHRAE Climate Zone 4 with 63% glazing and most of the rest spandrel. We worked with our team to find the right number, and ended up specifying that the curtain wall and spandrel (typical insulated backpan) will – combined – be U=.295 or better. SHGC will be .33 for most of the building, with a clearer .50 to .60 at the lobby. There are a few developments in the Washington State Energy Code and Seattle code that relate to envelope performance that it would be interesting to compare to what you are seeing as well. 1. Fenestration prescriptive requirements Table C402.4, image below. Regarding Columns A and B, there is a ‘fuel-based’ provision (Seattle only, required as of Jan 1 2018). Improved U values for the fenestration are required if one is using combustion or electric resistance for heating. The reasoning is that the use of gas combustion for heating can’t be made any more efficient at a building scale while heat pumps are comparatively more efficient. This required Seattle City Council approval because it biases one utility over another. [cid:image003.jpg@01D3B068.8FC5D230] 2. C402.5.1.2 Envelope performance testing (pressurization). A building pressurization test is required per ASTM E779, though it is not required to be passed (yet). The target is currently .40cfm/sf (.30 cfm/sf Seattle) though it is being lowered in the 2018 code. 3. Spandrel default value tables. We copied these from California. In many cases architects were suggesting (via their energy code calculations) that spandrel areas performed similarly to opaque walls with continuous insulation, but the reality is that they are not even close. Thus, we used default values and require proof if design teams are using better numbers than the defaults. 4. There is another provision for energy modeled projects that requires an additional 1% modeled improvement for every 3% glazing beyond 45%. Thus a 60% glazed building requires an additional 5% modeled improvement over a baseline.
