CS-v4 EAc5:Renewable energy production

Multi-building project - installing renewables on only 1 building

We have a multi industrial building project (3 buildings) registered through a Campus Approach (as opposed to Group approach). Is it acceptable to install the rooftop solar PV system on only one of the buildings, but distribute the equivalent cost of usable energy produced by the renewable energy system accross all three buildings for the purpose of this credit?

Appreciate any insight.

You should be able to allocate the renewable energy as you like to one or multiple buildings within your submission. Submit an allocation letter from the owner. Keep in mind that under v4, each individual project must achieve the Minimum Energy Performance prerrequisite without any renewables.

Hi Shannon,  Regarding EAc5, campus approach is not eligible, please kindly refer to LEED BD+C v4 guide page 439.
"Campus Approach: Ineligible. Each LEED project may pursue the credit individually."
Therefore, if project still wants to target this credit, then each project must install PV system. Best regards - Afogreen Build Team

We reached out to LEED Coach Canada to get clarification and they confirmed it is acceptable.  Yes. As per LEED Campus Guidance documentation, "in the case where the renewable energy equipment is not physically located on the applicant building(s), provide data for each LEED project building showing the projected energy consumption and the percentage to be met with that building’s prorated or dedicated share of renewable energy. The owner should also submit a certification letter acknowledging that the renewable energy from a central system will apply only to the submitted LEED project (s) and will not be applied to subsequent buildings for any future LEED certification."
