NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Modeling additions and alterations

Table G3.1 section 2 a says one of the requirements to exclude parts from the model is that "Work to be performed in excluded parts of the building shall meet the requirements of Sections 5-10." In my mind, the area i would want to exclude is area where work isn't being done. Does this mean in order to exclude a part from the energy model it must meet the mandatory requirements of sections 5-10, the prescriptive, or both?

The more important issue for LEED is the LEED project boundary. If you are only modeling an addition and there is no work in the existing building this could be pretty simple. Check the MPRs for further guidance on establishing the LEED project boundary. No it does not mean that an excluded part of the project must meet the mandatory or prescriptive requirements. It means that if there is work being performed in the existing it must comply with the requirements. For LEED this does not matter in an excluded part of the building if that work is outside the LEED project boundary.

My understanding, based on other threads here, is that under LEED NC you are certifying the entire building, so all spaces must be included in the calculations, even where work isn't being done. The specific example being whether exisiting spaces have to meet ASHRAE 62.1 and comply with IEQp1 even if no work is being done. Is that right?

Not always, check MPR #2 for details.

Ok, I'm getting from MPR2 that the whole building would have to regardless because it says the new or renovation of a building in its entirety. What situation would allow part of the building to not meet all requirements?

Get a copy of the MPR Supplimental Guidance to see the details.
