We are designing apartments with mixed mode ventilation--the areas within 25 feet of a window will be naturally ventilated and the rest of the dwelling units will be mechanically ventilated. Currently it's looking like the kitchen (and exhaust hoods) will be in the zone that will be naturally ventilated. In order to meet IEQp1, will the kitchen have to have mechanically ventilated makeup as per ASHRAE 62.1 Section 6 to meet IEQp1 or will the natural ventilation suffice?

As far as ASHRAE 62.1 - 2007 is concerned, natural ventilation is used in lieu of mechanical ventilation. However, you may not meet building code requirements without the mechanical ventilation.
