NC-v4 EQp1:Minimum indoor air quality performance

MERV Filters for PM 2.5

Dear All,

In our project we have Direct Evaporative coolers . It is a garment production building. In Evaporative coolers, usually the process is mixing of Air & water.

So, if the AIr & Water is mixed the dust particles will remain settled. In this given scenario, why should we need to implement the MERV filters to control PM 2.5.

Hi Banu,
The installation of MERV 11 or higher is required for project located in nonattainment area (LEED BD+C v4 guide page 611). Therefore, if your project is not located in nonattainment area, then MERV filter is no longer required. In addition, requirement of MERV filter for this location is to ensure that the outdoor air is clean prior to its introduction to occupied spaces (ASHRAE 60.1.2010 page 11).

How can you justify that Direct Evaporative coolers will have MERV 11 filtration efficiency?  As mentioned above, the MERV filter for this location requires ensuring that the outdoor air is clean before its introduction to occupied spaces (ASHRAE 60.1.2010 page 11). You can check whether your project is located in a nonattainment area.
