Material reuse calculation

The second example on pg 536 of the reference guide is a bit confusing. It states that the project team purchases 50 salvaged doors for $500 and that the equivalent value of new doors is $400. When they do the calculation of the sustainable criteria value, the equation is using $400. According to the ref guide under "Material Reuse Considerations," the cost of reused materials is either the actual cost paid or the replacement value, whichever is higher. According to that statement above, shouldn't the equation have used $500 instead? Or do we assume that the replacement value should ALWAYS be used. This is very confusing to me!

My guess is that there is a typo in the reference guide equation. I would suggest you follow the rule, not the example, but always try to build in some slack in case something goes amiss.
