Schools-2009 IEQc4.1:Low-Emitting Materials—Adhesives and Sealants

Low emitting materials adhesives and sealants

I have a question about which VOC limit to use on the chart... for an adhesive used for laminate to a wood cabinet, the VOC content is 426 g/l...will I use ' Special purpose contact adhesive', 80g/l?

Stephanie, 1. I am assuming you are using the erratum that allows you to pursue the LEED-NC IEQc4.1 and LEED-NC IEQc4.2 VOC limit compliance paths rather than the California standard. 2. Just checking - is this laminate adhesive actually being applied on-site, or off-site and then the completed cabinetry is brougth on-site? For IEQc4.1 uou only have to worry about the adhesive if it is applied on-site. 3. I would probably agree with your selection - Special purpose contact adhesive - which is 250g/l not 80g/l.

Renee, 1. Yes I am using the LEED NC IEQc4.1 voc limit chart. 2. The laminate adhesive is going to be applied on site but it has an 80 g/l VOC limit, so it falls within the set limit. 3. Yes I used the special purpose contact adhesive 250 g/l - There are 3 adhesives the contractor turned in with the submittal that exceed the VOC limits. They are the adhesives being used to put the cabinets together but if the cabinets are assembled off-site, can the adhesives still be used?

Stephanie, Make sure you are carefully looking at the Requirements in the LEED Reference Guide - if you take a look at the Credit Language for this credit, it states that "All adhesives and sealants used on the interior of the building (i.e., inside of the weatherproofing system and applied on-site) must comply..." Thus, if it is applied off-site, you are OK and are not required to comply with SCAQMD rule #1168. I hope it helps.
