List of states with pending electrification ordinances?

Hi all - Can you help me with a list of states with pending electrification/fossil fuel free ordinances? I am providing some technical aasistance for an article that is going to press soon. The author has listed WA, CO, and MA but I'm unsure how far each of these go and if it's technically correct to call them electrification ordinances.

There is also a question as to whether New York City is considering an electrification/fossil fuel free ordinance. Anyone know?

Thanks,

Kjell

Kjell, MA is technically mute on fossil fuels. The new law recently passed only requires that an optional net zero energy code be created. The actual language of the code will come later as it is put together. I doubt this code nor the ordinances that municipalities are putting together on their own will explicitly ban fossil fuels. However, the EUI or GHG targets that will be required to be achieved by the code/ordinances will require all-electric HVAC systems to reach. And at that point it doesn’t typically make sense to run gas lines for a smaller use like cooking or DHW. Plus the utilities are already telling projects they won’t provide gas if they aren’t using it for heating. _______________________________________ Katherine Bubriski, AIA CPHC, LEED AP BD+C, Fitwel Ambassador Director of Sustainability & Building Performance 617.666.7006 Direct Arrowstreet 10 Post Office Square Suite 700N Boston MA 02109 _______________________________________ arrowstreet.com Follow us on Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn From:

Kjell, In California, it's happening more at a local level than a state level, although the state is taking its own measures.  42 jurisdictions in the SF Bay Area have some form of a gas ban in place or in the works.  I've uploaded a couple of slides from a recent presentation that describe the above and might be useful to you.

In NYC the mayor recently (January 2021) called for a ban on gas hookups for new buildings to be in place by 2030.  That said it was never put to a law, and the mayors term is ending this year, so it is anyones guess what will actually happen with it.  The city and state have certainly been trending that direction, with Local Law 97 in the city and other statewide goals, but to date nothing concrete.
