Kitchen Exhaust ?

Are there any prerequisite requirements under N.C. v3 for kitchen hoods to be exhausted to the exterior, in a 14 story, multi family, condominium project? Thank you for the forum and your input. Jason

Jason, per LEED CIR 10248, any mechanically ventilated kitchen must meet the exhaust requirements of ASHRAE 62.1 Table 6-4 (exhausted to the outside). Naturally ventilated kitchens do not require exhaust tot he outdoors. Please see the ruling language here: http://www.usgbc.org/leed-interpretations?keys=10248

Does a kitchen hood in an area that is mechanically ventilated have to be directly exhausted or could their be a recirculating hood in a kitchen that has its own exhaust fan similar to a bathroom exhaust fan? (That would make it a room exhaust instead of a kitchen hood exhaust.)
