Introduction

I am new to the SAL and honored to be included. I'm Summer, managing partner at Ecoimpact Consulting. I manage a small staff of sustainability consultants who focus primarily on LEED project administration and documentation services. Day to day, I am working on implementation of the technical requirements of various LEED rating systems (in the weeds of LEED) for multiple building types but what inspires me are the far reaching impacts of green building on human health and wellness, resilience, equity and our shared planet.

I volunteer a ton: I am a LEEDuser Expert, I am the co-chair of the HPDC Third-Party Verification Technical Subgroup, I am the board chair for the US Green Building Council Carolinas Community, I'm on the City of Charlotte's Strategic Energy Action Plan Buildings Working Group and there a few others. I also contributed to a book on Sustainable Commercial Interiors with my business partner (retired), the amazing Penny Bonda.

I believe it is our imperative to continually raise the bar of what constitutes green building. I hope to draw inspiration from the ideas and insights of this impressive group of green building professionals and the rest of the Green Gurus.

Welcome Summer! Especially in these times it's great to connect with people across the country. Here in Philadelphia we're still in lockdown so platforms like Green Gurus have been important for my sanity and my mission! (Just kidding about the sanity I think)

Hi all, I'm new here too and wanted to introduce myself. I'm Carl Sterner, Director of Design & Sustainability at Sol Design + Consulting, an Ohio-based sustainability consulting practice. We do lots of certification-focused work (LEED, EGC, increasingly Passive House) -- including recently certifying the first multi-family Passive House in Ohio (affordable housing too!). Sol also has a small design studio which I lead, which takes on  projects that have high sustainability ambitions -- mostly single-family and small commercial, with a good number of historic retrofits as well (We're currently working on our first Living Building Challenge targeted project, which I'm super excited about.) In my past life I worked as a Director & Product Manager at Sefaira, where I helped to create the software of the same name. As part of this experience, I had the opportunity to work with sustainable design leaders at firms across the country who were trying to integrate analysis as a core part of their design processes and standards. Like Summer, I'm active outside of work as well. I helped found the Cincinnati 2030 District and serve as a member of its working group; I'm active with the regional sustainability alliance, Green Umbrella, which helps implement the Green Cincinnati Plan; and I'm on the board of a local CDC that focuses on sustainability and affordable housing. Current areas of interest/focus for me include:
  • Balancing operational & embodied carbon impacts & charting the course toward true zero carbon (or carbon negative?) buildings
  • Resilience, but understood as an outcome of system structure rather than "disaster preparedness" which is too limited a framing
  • And the biggie: How can the built environment support degrowth and a regenerative culture? How do we help build new systems & institutions to replace the unsustainable, inequitable ones that dominate our society today? (I think this has a lot to do with the design process and the structure of the firm, as well as with material sourcing. Could we start looking at "embodied inequality" or "embodied capital bias" in addition to embodied carbon?)
I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you better!
