Introducing a New Green Guru

My name is Douglas Flandro. I am the sustainable design leader at CambridgeSeven in Cambridge, MA. I started my career in film and theater design. I moved into museum exhibit design with a graduate degree in interior architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003. I still design museum exhibits for science museums, nature visitor centers, children's museums etc, but my interest in sustainability has lead me to head up the sustainable design working group and I have become the in-house expert on sustainable materials and practices. I have acted as the LEED coordinator on several higher education projects. We are working on strategies to lower EUIs and to reduce red list building materials for all buildings as well as supporting motivated clients to successfully develop Net Zero buildings.

I am especially interested in sustainable exhibit design, new technologies, immersive experiences, experiential graphic design and hands-on interactive exhibits. I have taught computer design courses at the Wentworth Institute of Technology and has served as a guest lecturer at the Rhode Island School of Design. I am also a contributing author to the section on Museums and Exhibit Spaces in the design reference book, Interior Graphic Standards, Wiley 2003. I am looking forward to getting to know many of you better. Thank you for your commitment to sustainable design and construction.
