We documented three interior products on a school project in Canada: an acoustic ceiling tile, a PET acoustic wall panel and a solid surface for millwork. Two have product specific EPDs and HPDs. The solid surface has no EPD, so we described its energy, water, GHG and waste impacts qualitatively and listed the sources checked.
Three things we noticed. EPDs use different functional units and service lives, so values can’t be compared. Some safety data sheets disagree with the HPDs. Installation accessories such as tape and adhesive often have no documents.
We also did this at the end of the project, so it could not influence product selection. It would have been more useful at specification. How have other teams handled these points?
